Iron&Court Engagement Concierge.

Today is a really big day for my friends Neelima & Kristin. These talented ladies recently started a company called Iron&Court, specializing in engagement and proposal planning. They came to me a few months ago seeking creative consulting, a website, head shots…the works. (Similar to the work I did for Natasha Huang of NH Media)

Their aesthetic is a good match for my design sensibility and I consider this my strongest graphic design work to date. (Big shout out to Lowell who helped me build the site) I think my favorite part was dragging them around my neighborhood, trespassing on private property with a can of hairspray under one arm and my SLR under the other, snapping headshots as strangers watched in amusement. :)

As a self-employed creative type, I’m always super supportive of friends who dare to embark on a new endeavor and start something of their own.  It isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it x 1000. Confucius said “Chose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Believe the wise, old, Chinese guy.

Today is Iron&Court’s official launch party! There’s going to be music, hor d’oeuvres, an open wine bar, etc…so if you’re in the Silicon Valley area and would like to celebrate with my friends or plan on proposing soon, email me and I’ll get you on the list.

Girls Write Now Pair Portraits.

I am extremely fortunate to have had so many amazing mentors and professors. Ms. Sooy taught me how to see, Ms. Morris taught me how to write, and Daniel Joseph Martinez taught me how to think beyond everything I thought I knew. One thing I know for certain is that learning by example and being challenged by mentors I connected with taught me to value my education and my work.

For about a year I’ve been volunteering as a photographer for a non-profit called Girls Write Now, a creative writing program that pairs over 60 professional writers with girls in high school, most of them at-risk from New York City’s under-funded public high schools. In a city where only 21% of high school seniors are deemed “prepared for college”, 100% of GWN’s girls are both college-ready and college-bound. With writing portfolios, awards, and scholarships, this fall they head to schools like Brown, Johns Hopkins and Duke.

Mentees from Girls Write Now were recently invited to the White House on the invitation of Michelle Obama and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities to attend a day-long celebration of American poetry and prose. (Info from the GWN website and newsletters)

I got involved with Girls Write Now through Volunteer Match, which is extremely informative and easy to use. I was on the site for about 5 minutes before I found GWN, which happened to be the ideal match. I highly recommend checking it out.

You can support Girls Write Now by purchasing the 2011 anthology, “Opening Lines” (my photos are in the back!), or by donating directly. Fundraising is a tremendous amount of work. Support organizations that work towards social change! :) Big virtual high-five to anyone who volunteers, mentors, or teaches. You’re awesome.

Little Lili goes to school.

My dear friend Anna asked me photograph her little girl and her “boyfriend” at school and I gladly obliged. It took me several hours to choose the best ones because apparently all pictures of toddlers are unbearably adorable. I really enjoy taking candid and unique family photos, so if any of you have special moments you want to capture, you know where to find me!

Natasha Huang of NH Media.

For the last few months I’ve been working with my good friend, Natasha Huang on developing brand identity for her marketing and PR company, NH Media. Natasha and I have been friends since high school, and often reminisce about the days we would goof off in physics class. We lost touch in college, but found each other again in New York, so NH Media was the perfect opportunity for us to work on a project together. I designed business cards, a website, and all kinds of other good stuff that I will blog about in the near future.

NH Media targets socially conscious companies and entrepreneurs while supporting organizations like The Blind Project, that rescue and rehabilitate victims of sex trafficking in Asia. She is a social media GURU so if you need to get your name out there, contact her. She’s so convincing that she actually got me to sign up for Twitter.

We also had an impromptu photo shoot and took some nice head shots for her website and bio. Which one do you guys like the most?
